Shey Phoksundo Lake

Shey Phoksundo Lake, alpine freshwater lake, lies in Shey Phoksundo National Park of Dolpa District – the most significant territorial district of Karnali Province of Nepal. Located at an elevation of 3,611 m from sea level, the lake has been designated a Ramsar Site since September 2007.

 

One of the most exotic tourist destinations, Phoksundo Lake Trek, is a short and journey that is also considered sacred by Buddhism and Bon-Po religions. There are 20 famous monasteries in the southern belt, with one gompa on the eastern side of the lake, which is full of devotees on annual prayers.

 

The culturally rich region, the locals in the Lake area, follow Tibetan culture. Ringmo village, the famous and beautiful town on the South of the Lake, is home to religiously bounded people, living in peace and harmony.

 

You can take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and fly to Juphal, the starting point of the trail to the lake. Through the dense forests, full of Pines, Oaks, and Firs, you will witness beautiful waterfalls on your path. You will pass through picturesque villages like Dunai, Chhepka, and Shyanta. The star attraction of the trail is a great 330 m high waterfall. The trail is rich in wildlife that adds suspense in every step.

 

You can come across endangered species like Himalayan Tahr and Tibetan Sheep, which itself will be as high as viewing the Phoksundo Lake. The alluring panoramic view of Kanjirowa Himal (6,612 m) adds excitement to the trip. The trek can be 11 to 12 days long if you are willing to explore the nooks and corners of Shey Phoksundo National Park and start the journey from Kathmandu.
